October 2018 General Conference

What a wonderful opportunity we had this month to receive counsel from prophets, seers, and revelators and other leaders of the church! What talks or themes stood out to you? Did you feel strengthened, comforted, inspired? Did you receive answers to prayer or direction for life? How will you apply what you learned to become a better disciple of Christ? Share your experience with us in the comments below so we can all be edified together!

In the General Women's Session on Saturday evening, Pres Nelson made the following prophetic plea to all sisters of the church to leave the world behind and be part of the gathering of scattered Israel, "the greatest challenge and the greatest cause and the greatest work on Earth today":
  • Participate in a 10-day fast from social media and from any other media that bring negative and impure thoughts to your mind.
    • Pray to know which influences to remove.
    • What did you notice? Is there a change in your priorities?
    • Record & follow through with each impression.
  • Read the Book of Mormon before the end of the year.
    • Read with full purpose of heart, and the Lord will help you achieve this goal.
    • The heavens will open with blessings of inspiration and revelation.
    • Mark each verse that speaks of or refers to the Savior.
    • Be intentional in talking about Christ, rejoicing in Christ and preaching of Christ with your family and friends.
    • Teach those whom you love what you learn from the scriptures about how to turn to the Savior for strength, cleansing, and healing.
  • Establish a pattern of regular temple attendance.
    • This may require sacrifice.
    • Regular attendance allows the Lord to teach you how to draw upon priesthood power.
    • Study prayerfully about temples in the scriptures and the words of living prophets; seek to know more, understand more, and feel more about temples than you ever have before.
  • Participate fully in Relief Society.

February Council Meeting: Supporting Each Other in Our Challenges

In Sunday's D4 Relief Society council meeting, we anonymously wrote down some of our current struggles and talked through a few of them together. Sisters shared ideas about how to act on promptings, strengthen testimony, overcome loneliness, and celebrate each sister's unique contributions to our sisterhood. Common themes that emerged from the slips of paper on which people wrote struggles include the following: Loneliness Anxiety & depression Being consistent about achieving goals Challenges associated with a having an inactive family member Balancing responsibilities Gaining and strengthening testimony Trusting or having hope in God Improving gospel study/knowledge Financial concerns Overcoming failings & weaknesses Feeling inadequate/comparing self to others Relating to other sisters in RS/fitting in/building friendships Sharing the gospel/reaching out to others with love These are struggles that many sisters in our ward are experiencing. How many ...

July 4th Sunday: Ministering to others

During April 2018 General Conference, Pres Nelson announced, "We have made the decision to retire home teaching and visiting teaching as we have known them. Instead, we will implement a newer, holier approach to caring for and ministering to others. We will refer to these efforts simply as 'ministering.'" What were your initial thoughts about this announcement? In the last couple months since this change was made, what has worked for you in your ministering efforts? What hasn't worked? How does ministering bring you closer to Christ? Below are some of the comments made by sisters in Relief Society during our discussion this week. Feel free to add additional comments you may have in the comments section below. Initial thoughts? initial relief that visiting teaching was ending, but this was quickly replaced by the realization that visiting teaching was really just changing its name expectation that ministering would be much different from visiting teaching,...

"Be With and Strengthen Them"

In April 2018 General Conference, Elder Jeffrey R Holland had the opportunity and assignment to explain the shift from visiting and home teaching to ministering and to help us understand how and why to minister to those around us. In the four months since this change was announced, what changes have you noticed or promoted in your care for others? How have your efforts to minister changed you? What additional changes are still needed for you to be a better and more Christ-like minister? Below are some of the thoughts shared during class on Sunday. We'd love to hear and learn from even more people! Please share your insights and experiences with us in the comments below! When we truly minister, we are thinking about sisters more, praying for them often, and looking for ways to serve them and better meet their needs. As Elder Holland taught, there should be "more care and concern, not less." Ministering can meet the needs of not only the sister being served but also th...
