For our 4th Sunday discussion about ministering this month, we considered what we can learn about ministering from the story of Ruth and Naomi in the Old Testament. We referred to the scriptural account in the book of Ruth and a talk given by Sis Barbara Smith, a former Relief Society General President, titled "The Bond of Charity". Below are some thoughts that were shared during class. What other insights have you gained from studying the story of Ruth? How has ministering helped you develop charity? How does ministering provide opportunities to demonstrate love through action? Share with us in the comments below!
- Ruth sacrificed the life she had known to stay with her mother-in-law, Naomi. What are you willing to sacrifice to help someone?
- Ruth showed commitment to her mother-in-law, Naomi. How can we more fully commit to those we are assigned to minister to? How does commitment help us serve better?
- We need to be willing to work hard; we reap what we sow.
- Don't try to escape the struggles of life; we get to choose how we struggle.
- Learn to accept that life will be hard.
- Challenges are essential for life.
- Work is a blessing!
- Boaz was an example of giving; he went beyond what was required by law and left additional food for Ruth to glean.
- The full reward for our efforts will be given in the Lord's time, but He won't deny blessings to those who are worthy.
- Ruth & Naomi served in different ways, but both were important. We can use our individual strengths and abilities to minister effectively.
