5th Sunday Bishopric Message: Unity

In our combined Relief Society/Elders Quorum meeting this past Sunday, we received counsel from Bishop Franklin about unity.

We're taught in the scriptures to be unified; below are a few examples. What else have you learned from the scriptures about the importance of unity and how to achieve it?

  • Acts 1:14 -- The people "continued with one accord". In April 2018 General Conference, Sis Aburto taught that "'with one accord' means in agreement, in unity, and all together."
  • 4 Ne 1:15 -- The people were unified and experienced no contention because the love of God was in their hearts.
  • Mosiah 18:8-9 -- The people became unified when they were willing to mourn with, comfort, and bear the burdens of their fellow saints.

Our ward faces several barriers to unity, such as those listed below. How are you affected by these barriers? What can you do to help us overcome the barriers and feel more unified as a ward?

  • People in many different stages of life, with extremely few in the middle-aged-with-teenagers category
  • Transient nature of the ward (the majority of the people attending the meeting had been in the ward less than 2 years)
  • Large geographic area
  • Long distance from the church building, which limits our building's use as a central gathering place

We had a fun opportunity to meet in smaller groups and get to know each other a bit better. What will you do to continue getting to know your fellow ward members? Below are a few ideas; how many more can you think of?

  • Each week at church, sit next to someone you don't know yet.
  • Attend a Relief Society, ward, or stake activity to interact with other people even if the nature of the activity doesn't perfectly match your current hobbies.
  • Find time to talk to someone who attends a different meeting than you during 3rd hour (Nursery, Primary, Young Women, Relief Society).
  • Carpool to the temple together (imagine how much you can learn about someone in a 4-hour car ride!).
  • Do service with or for someone.

Next Sunday, we will continue to discus unity in our council meeting. Before then, please do the following:

  • Pay attention to the sisters who are in sacrament meeting on Sunday.
  • Consider the following questions and either come to our meeting prepared to discuss or record your ideas on the agenda (or email Ashlee at ashes.taylor@gmail.com).
    • How can we involve sisters who can't attend Sunday meetings?
    • How can we make sisters feel more welcome and a part of Relief Society?

February Council Meeting: Supporting Each Other in Our Challenges

In Sunday's D4 Relief Society council meeting, we anonymously wrote down some of our current struggles and talked through a few of them together. Sisters shared ideas about how to act on promptings, strengthen testimony, overcome loneliness, and celebrate each sister's unique contributions to our sisterhood. Common themes that emerged from the slips of paper on which people wrote struggles include the following: Loneliness Anxiety & depression Being consistent about achieving goals Challenges associated with a having an inactive family member Balancing responsibilities Gaining and strengthening testimony Trusting or having hope in God Improving gospel study/knowledge Financial concerns Overcoming failings & weaknesses Feeling inadequate/comparing self to others Relating to other sisters in RS/fitting in/building friendships Sharing the gospel/reaching out to others with love These are struggles that many sisters in our ward are experiencing. How many ...

July 4th Sunday: Ministering to others

During April 2018 General Conference, Pres Nelson announced, "We have made the decision to retire home teaching and visiting teaching as we have known them. Instead, we will implement a newer, holier approach to caring for and ministering to others. We will refer to these efforts simply as 'ministering.'" What were your initial thoughts about this announcement? In the last couple months since this change was made, what has worked for you in your ministering efforts? What hasn't worked? How does ministering bring you closer to Christ? Below are some of the comments made by sisters in Relief Society during our discussion this week. Feel free to add additional comments you may have in the comments section below. Initial thoughts? initial relief that visiting teaching was ending, but this was quickly replaced by the realization that visiting teaching was really just changing its name expectation that ministering would be much different from visiting teaching,...

"Be With and Strengthen Them"

In April 2018 General Conference, Elder Jeffrey R Holland had the opportunity and assignment to explain the shift from visiting and home teaching to ministering and to help us understand how and why to minister to those around us. In the four months since this change was announced, what changes have you noticed or promoted in your care for others? How have your efforts to minister changed you? What additional changes are still needed for you to be a better and more Christ-like minister? Below are some of the thoughts shared during class on Sunday. We'd love to hear and learn from even more people! Please share your insights and experiences with us in the comments below! When we truly minister, we are thinking about sisters more, praying for them often, and looking for ways to serve them and better meet their needs. As Elder Holland taught, there should be "more care and concern, not less." Ministering can meet the needs of not only the sister being served but also th...
